Transferable, plasmid-mediated vanB-type glycopeptide resistance in Enterococcus faecium.

An approximately 60-kb transferable, vanB-carrying plasmid has been identified in a clinical Enterococcus faecium strain. A similar plasmid has been observed in an unrelated E. faecium strain, suggesting that plasmid transfer of vanB operons occurs in nature and plays a role in the dissemination of VanB-type resistance among strains of E. faecium.

First Characterization of a Cluster of VanA-Type Glycopeptide-Resistant Enterococcus faecium, Colombia

From August 1998 to October 1999, glycopeptide-resistant enterococci (GRE) were isolated from 23 infected patients at a teaching hospital in Medellín, Colombia. Identification at the species level and by multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay indicated that all isolates were Enterococcus faecium. The isolates were highly resistant to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, penicillin, strepto...

Diversity of vanA-type vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolated from broilers, poultry slaughterers and hospitalized humans in Greece.

OBJECTIVES This study investigated the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in the broiler production environment after the avoparcin ban and their epidemiological relationship with human clinical VRE from the same geographical regions in Greece. METHODS Caecal contents from broilers (n = 500) from eight livestock farms and faecal samples from poultry slaughterers (n = 50), al...

Emergence of VanB phenotype-vanA genotype Enterococcus faecium clinical isolate in Bulgaria.

anA glycopeptide resistance is characterized by acquired nducible resistance to both vancomycin and teicoplanin, hereas the VanB phenotype is characterized by variable evels of resistance to vancomycin but susceptibility to eicoplanin.1 Here we report a vancomycin-resistant Enterooccus faecium (VREFm) strain with VanB phenotype-vanA enotype incongruence. In the course of antimicrobial susceptib...
